WACA INVESTMENT WELCOME, BUT WHERE IS THE PERTH CITY DEAL?

Labor welcomes the Federal Government’s investment in the historic WACA ground in East Perth.

We call on the Federal Government to finalise the Perth City Deal which was due to be completed in April. Funding this project through the Perth City Deal makes it even more urgent that this deal is finalised. The Perth City Deal will deliver WA jobs, but it is eight months late.

Shadow Minister for Cities and Urban Infrastructure, Andrew Giles, said “the Perth City Deal is a once in a generation opportunity to grow Perth – to activate the city centre and provide economic stimulus”.

“The Morrison Government has to get on with the job of delivering the Perth City Deal.”

Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Don Farrell, said it has been clear for a number of years that the training facilities at the WACA have been in need of serious investment.

“Investing in modern training facilities will help our professional players and the next generation of cricketers.”

Member for Perth, Patrick Gorman, said the WACA investment will create a community and sporting hub for the local community and for all Western Australians.

“Labor committed to this project seven months ago. Western Australians love the WACA and have been very supportive of giving it a new life and purpose.”

“I congratulate WACA CEO Christina Matthews for her strong advocacy. Senator Farrell and I met with her during the recent Shadow Cabinet visit to Perth, and it was clear then that her drive to deliver this redevelopment would ensure it became a reality.”

The WACA redevelopment project will provide community facilities, professional grade training facilities and a museum to preserve Western Australia’s cricket history.
