SBS News Prime Minister Tony Abbott officially appointed former military general Peter Cosgrove (Peter Cosgrove) as the new governor, succeeding the current governor Quentin Bryce (Quentin Bryce). This news has been confirmed.

Peter Cosgrove, as the new governor, will take office in March for a five-year term.

Cosgrove led the Australian peacekeeping force in East Timor in 1999, then joined the army and served as a general in the Defence Force from 2002 to 2005. He also led the disaster relief and reconstruction force to the disaster area after Cyclone Larry hit northern Queensland. A community in Townsville even changed its name to Cosgrove in 2008 to commemorate its contributions.
