Australian media headlines: Malaysia Airlines MH17 passenger plane was shot down in Ukraine near the Russian border
Dutch officials confirmed that Malaysia Airlines passenger plane MH17 that crashed near the border with Russia carried 27 Australians. All 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board were killed. Australian Prime Minister Albert said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) can only confirm that 23 Australian citizens are on board, but obviously there may be more Australians on board."
