What's more serious is that New Zealand produces about 1700 to 2000 tons of Manuka honey each year, but globally, the annual sales of honey in the name of Manuka is as high as 1 tons. Product miscellaneous price confusion
New Zealand Manuka honey is recognized as having antibacterial, repairing, and nourishing effects, and these effects come from an active antibacterial substance called "UMF" (UMF).
According to different UMF content, Manuka honey is divided into 5+, 10+, 15+, 20+, 25+, 30+ grades. The higher the grade, the higher the content of antibacterial substances. Of course, the price is also higher. However, a reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News found that the prices of products of the same grade differed greatly on the terminal.
Yesterday, a reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News saw on the shelf of China Resources Hall in TaiKoo Hui that several products labeled "Manuka" honey were placed together with other imported honey. The retail price of a 250g bottle of Comvita Manuka Honey (20+) is 999 yuan, which is almost 30 times the price of domestic honey of the same weight. "Our things are absolutely authentic. Many people come to buy them and they are repeat customers." said a waitress. She told reporters that the larger the number before the "+" sign, the higher the level and the better the quality.
An employee of a New Zealand Specialty Trading Company in Tianhe told the Yangcheng Evening News reporter that the same 20+ pack (250g) of Comvita Manuka honey sold by him was 788 yuan.
So what about online shopping? The reporter logged into Jingdong Mall and found that a bottle of Comvita Manuka Honey 2015+ (20g) marked as new in 250 was priced at 756 yuan. The same product is displayed on Taobao for 660 yuan, and it is said that it can be purchased on behalf of the customer and the price is negotiable.
A reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News found in major supermarkets in Guangzhou that there are many brands of Manuka honey in New Zealand, including ManukaHealth, Comvita, DNZ, Richora, Black Soil Rice Flower, There are dozens of kinds such as healthlife, simplyNZ, New Bee Queen Alboni, St. Pei's, Watson Manuka honey, etc.
In fact, it is difficult for ordinary consumers to distinguish the difference between these "Manuka" honeys, and it is even more difficult to understand why the same label is "Manuka" honey, and why there is such a big discrepancy in price.
An undeniable fact is that because of its antibacterial ingredients, Manuka honey has become an important export product of New Zealand, and it is sought after in many countries such as China, and the price has increased year by year. A staff member of a supermarket told a reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News: "We have received relevant notices that the price will definitely be increased in August, at least nearly 8 yuan per bottle."
The global market has become fake
Does buying Manuka honey with a higher "+" sign mean that consumers can sit back and relax? The answer is still no. Behind the chaos of terminal sales prices reflects the predicament of the rampant Manuka honey fakes. According to statistics from a New Zealand beekeepers association, New Zealand only produces about 1700-2000 tons of Manuka honey each year. However, globally, the annual sales of honey in the name of Manuka is as high as 1 tons, which means that the annual market At least 8000 tons are counterfeit products, and the counterfeit product ratio is as high as 80%.
It is precisely because of the 1% counterfeit product ratio of Manuka honey in the market that in the past three years, Manuka honey has been investigated and dealt with several times in China alone. In January last year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced that seven batches of Manuka honey totaling 7 kg from New Zealand were found to be adulterated and destroyed or returned.
What's more, in order to increase product sales, many exporters put the UMF logo on their own. Relevant departments in Shenzhen once detected an excessive number of colonies in a product called Manuka honey, but the bottle of this product did not have the relevant label required for Manuka honey. In theory, for a honey product to bear the UMF (Unique Manuka Ingredient) logo, it needs to be licensed by the New Zealand Unique Manuka Ingredient Honey Production Association.
However, in fact, the New Zealand Honeycomb Honey Association has publicly admitted that it did not regulate the scope of the Manuka name. The relevant British food research institute had previously conducted sampling tests on 5 brands of New Zealand Manuka honey, and found that there were no active antibacterial substances in 4 brands of New Zealand Manuka honey.
An industry insider told a reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News that taking the brand Comvita Manuka Honey 20+ (250g) as an example, don't buy the ones with the price lower than 700 yuan, it may be fake. There are two possibilities. One is the low-priced product, which is active Manuka honey. Due to the lower UMF content, the price is relatively cheap; the other is more counterfeit products.
So what exactly is the difference between the true and false of Manuka honey?

First, look for the UMF trademark. UMF is a trademark of the New Zealand Manuka Honey Association UMFHA authorized to use by members of the association. Every bottle of qualified Manuka honey must use the UMF logo on the label, and strictly follow the test results of the independent laboratory to mark the UMF unique wheat element value. This is the most intuitive and effective way to identify genuine and fake Manuka honey.
Second, look at the color and density.Although the pure New Zealand Manuka honey has a slightly different color and lustre due to different origins, it follows the principle of uniform color. Manuka honey is darker in color and yellowish brown.
Pure Manuka honey has a high concentration, is delicate and fat, and the products are mostly solid, milky texture, and good ductility. It is very different from domestic honey.
