After the NSW Police requested the state government to increase the workforce for the program, the government created 2000 new places for the Certificate of Safe Operation 2 course.
The promotional materials for this free training program promise to be "hired immediately" in the hotel quarantine program.
According to documents obtained by The Australian at the end of last year, NSW’s hotel quarantine department was overwhelmed by the demand for security personnel.
The operation update and meeting minutes on October 10 showed: "The main learning and operation indicators show that the current security personnel are limited, and it is unreliable to deploy more than 30 people per day."
Governor Gladys Berejiklian announced on Wednesday that the state will increase the weekly limit for international arrivals to 3000 from Monday because "this is the right approach" and the system can handle it.
"Although since the beginning of the week, the number of people passing through Sydney Airport has increased, and the problem of more infectious strains has indeed become more prominent... It is very important that we remain vigilant," Ms. Berejiklian said.
NSW Police Security Licensing and Enforcement (SLED) Assistant Commissioner Lisa Stockley said on LinkedIn that the new training program was conducted after SLED "successfully launched a funding program."
This three-week training aims to standardize the working standards of quarantine personnel.
Since this training is funded by the NSW government as part of the JobTrainer program, applicants can save more than $1000 in fees.
A spokesperson for the State Department of Education said that under this training program reviewed by SLED, "important infection prevention and control training will be provided as a supplement."In recent weeks, due to poor infection control, many hotel quarantine personnel in Australia have contracted COVID-19.
Training graduates can apply for a security work license in NSW, but they will not be directly employed by the NSW Police Department; they will work for existing security companies that have contracted with the quarantine plan.
Since its launch on March 3 last year, more than 27 people have passed the NSW hotel quarantine program.
The Australian newspaper reported late last year that since the project began, at least 169 security guards have been fired for various misconduct.
However, the NSW Police Department said in a statement that “the requirements of the hotel’s quarantine program have been met”, despite the lack of staff in the previous briefing.
SLED is investigating a private security company working on the quarantine plan, and investigating its relationship with a company that went bankrupt after owing millions of taxpayers.
