In the early hours of Tuesday morning, police officers rushed into the 45-year-old former swimming star’s seaside apartment in Rozelle, Sydney. He was taken naked to the chair in the living room, waiting for the police to search his property.
Miller won the silver and bronze medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and when he was ordered to put his hands behind his head and be handcuffed, all this became a distant memory. The police brought him a shirt, and then he was taken away from his home, always in handcuffs.
According to reports, the police found about 1 kg of heroin, worth 25, and $75,000 in cash during the raid.
Miller is accused of directing a criminal group and supplying large amounts of methamphetamine, commonly known as methamphetamine.
The co-defendant, 47-year-old Wayne Johnson, was arrested at a house in nearby Balmain earlier on Tuesday and charged with participating in a criminal syndicate and commercial supply of methamphetamine.
The arrest was carried out after the NSW Police Drug and Weapons Unit and the NSW Crime Commission launched a joint operation, which began in January and declared war on the state's supply of methamphetamine.
Detective Superintendent John Watson said the group allegedly planned to distribute methamphetamine from Sydney to Albury on the border between NSW and Victoria.
"It is said that (Miller) is the director of this particular group," Superintendent Watson said. "He is said to be giving orders. Therefore, this is the leader of the group and others are said to be working under his command."
Superintendent Watson said the police seized "very high purity" methamphetamine in eight candles melted in glassware.
"The drugs we seized were daily candles with multiple purposes and thoroughfare. However, they did not have any fragrance, and each candle contained half a kilogram of methamphetamine."
The investigation is ongoing and more people are expected to be arrested. Superintendent Watson said that this was an "important" crackdown that hit the methamphetamine trade in rural areas.
"We know that the black market value of the methamphetamine we seized is more than 200 million yuan. This is not a small operation. They are well organized and well funded. They are well set up and intend to spread death and suffering throughout the state.
"In this case, Albury is the town of choice. Rural areas in NSW are being hit hard by methamphetamine. This particular group intends to participate.
"Both people were very surprised, but they have now been detained and are cooperating with the police."
The police seized a white Toyota Camry, which was allegedly used by the group to transport drugs, as well as cell phones, documents, encrypted electronic devices and a small amount of illegal drugs. The police also raided a bank in Bankstown, but found nothing related to this investigation.
Miller married the television personality Charlotte Dawson from 1999 to 2000.In a TV interview in 2014, he once talked about his struggle with drug addiction.
